Halloween Tips & Tricks

Halloween is the time of year most people want to go crazy on the candy and end up with sugar overload. The problem is once you give your body the sugar, the cravings just don't go away and usually get worse.

So, here are a few tips!

  1. Don't buy your candy ahead of time. You will only be tempting yourself with all those goodies in the house.
  2. Don't buy the stuff you like (ha ha). You will only be tempted by the leftover candy.
  3. If your kids Trick or Treat, let them enjoy whatever they want the day of Halloween. Indulge away!! This lets the feel how the candy actually affects them. And, kind of just part of the day, right?
  4. The couple days following Halloween, limit to a couple treats per day for your kids. Maybe 1 piece after lunch and 1 after dinner.
  5. On Monday, find a spot to donate the candy. I usually give my kids a little "trade-in" money that way everyone is happy.  Check your local gym, dentist office or school. Most take the donations to send off to military.
  6. If you feel necessary, you can also buy a healthier swap to add in with the trade-in money. Here are a few favorites. I included the links but all of these can be found locally at select grocery stores stores like Fresh Thyme or Target. Skinny Dipped Dark Chocolate Peanut Butter Cups, Hu Chocolate, Unreal Bars (similar to a snickers)
  7. After a week, time to detox off the sugar! You don't want your body or your kids bodies to get accustomed to eating it. The more you eat it, the more you will continue to crave it. Instead, stock up on fruit and have it cleaned, cut up and ready for snacking. Fresh fruit is a great way to swap the sugar out.
